MOSCATEL DE SETÚBAL TORNA VIAGEM RETURNS TO JOSÉ MARIA DA FONSECA
THE TORNA VIAGEM MOSCATEL DE SETÚBAL FROM JOSÉ MARIA DA FONSECA HAS RETURNED AFTER ANOTHER HISTORIC TRIP IN THE SAGRES TALLSHIP
After another trip aboard the Sagres Tallship, the famous Torna Viagem Moscatel De Setúbal has returned home to Azeitão on September 2nd. This trip lasted for approximately 3 months and went to several ports in the US, like Philadelphia, New Bedford and Boston. Aboard the Sagres Tallship, there were one cask of Moscatel Roxo 2014 and two casks of Moscatel de Setúbal from the same vintage.
This trip is part of an experiment that has the goal to evaluate the influence of the Equator on the wine. This time, the wine only travelled through the Northern hemisphere but the company has kept in stainless steel vats, wine from the same vintage, in order to compare during the next time that the Sagres crosses the Equator on a journey.
This experience was last carried out in 2010, when the wine travelled around the world. In 2007 and 2000 the wine crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a shorter trip of Sagres. On all of these three journeys the wine was proven to achieve different characteristics and improve in quality when compared with the testimony wine that was kept in the cellars of José Maria da Fonseca.
These four experiences in the XXI century reenact the famous trips carried out during the XIX century by the Portuguese sail ships that travelled around the world which gave birth to the mythic wines of the Moscatel de Setúbal Torna Viagem. These last trips have a scientific goal and the wine is not expected to be commercialized in the near future. The winemaking team led by Domingos Soares Franco described this wine as “a softer and velvety Moscatel de Setúbal, with increased complexity and a small hint of saltiness. It is transformed in a try unique and outstanding wine”.
